![]() The inner construction of the discus can either be solid or hollow while the cross section of the edge should have a radius of 6mm. It should be 22cm in diameter for men and 18cm for women. The discus can be made of wood, plastic, fiberglass or metal with a circular edge and metallic rim. However, the distance is measured till the point where the tape crosses the inside edge of the circumference of the circle. The officials hold the tape in such a way that the zero end is at the point where the discus broke the field and then the measuring tape is drawn to the centre of the throwing circle. The measurement is made from the first point where the discus breaks the ground to the inside of the arc of the throwing circle with a tape. In case of a tie-breaker, the second-best throw, determines the winner. Based on the initial three attempts, the top eight are allowed another three chances and their positions are decided based on the longest throw. Every competitor is allowed three attempts to mark their best throw. Each country is allowed to send three discus throwers at the event.įrom the qualifying event, only 12 athletes with the best throws can proceed to the final. Sport guide: Throwing Discus Discus throw rules and scoring system at the OlympicsĪthletes achieving the Olympic qualification mark represent the country at the Games. Each athlete is given eight attempts at the Olympics to mark their best possible throw. There is also a particular boundary marked for landing the disc and if lands beyond then the throw is considered invalid. And if the athlete crosses the circle before the disc lands on the ground then it is considered a foul throw. The athletes are also prohibited to touch the ground beyond the circle. ![]() The metal disc is basically thrown by an athlete by standing inside a circle with a diameter of 2.5m.ĭiscus throwers are not allowed to touch the top of rim of the throwing circle, but can touch the inside edges of it. The weight of the discus is fixed at 2kg for the men and 1kg for women. What is the weight of the discus and how is it thrown? The technique also helped him earn a silver medal at the 1900 Olympics in Paris. It should also be noted that Frantisek Janda-Suk, a Czech athlete, was the first modern athlete to throw the discus while rotating the whole body. ![]() The discus throw is also part of the modern decathlon. The women's competition was included at Amsterdam 1928. The men's discus throw event then became a part of the Olympics at the very first edition at Athens in 1896. The discipline would be later re-discovered by Christian Georg Kohlrausch and his students in the 1870s. It was introduced in the ancient Greek pentathlon event - running, long jump, discus throw, javelin throw, and wrestling - and can be dated back to 708 BC. The discus throw, where a competitor hurls a heavy disc, was one of the events at the Ancient Olympics. ![]()

![]() ![]() This paper is devoted to the reduction of data transfer between the main memory and direct mapped cache for blocked shortest paths algorithms (BSPA), which represent data by a D matrix of blocks. The direct mapped cache significantly loses the associative cache we can improve its performance by appropriate mapping virtual addresses to physical locations. After comparing the basic and blocked Floyd-Warshall algorithms, we conclude that the blocked algorithm well localizes data accesses within one block, but it does not localize data dependencies among blocks. We have measured the frequencies versus the cache size, the data block size, the amount of processed data, the type of cache, and the type of algorithm. This paper presents a technique of simulating the direct mapped, k-way associative and fully associative cache during the algorithm execution, to measure the frequency of read data to cache and write data to memory operations. The all pairs shortest paths algorithms solve many practical problems, and it is important to know what algorithm and what cache type match best. ![]() The miss rate strongly depends on the executed algorithm. The least recently used replacement policy serves the sets. The hit and miss rate depends on the cache type: direct mapped, set associative and fully associative cache. The replacement policy chooses a data to evict, trying to predict the future accesses to memory. The misses produce processor stalls and slow down the computations. In the last case, the cache may have to evict other data. When the processor accesses memory, the cache behavior depends on if the data is in cache: a cache hit occurs if it is, and, a cache miss occurs, otherwise. Caches are capable of exploiting temporal and spatial localities during program execution. It aims to store copies of frequently used data and to reduce the access time to the main memory. Caches are intermediate level between fast CPU and slow main memory. ![]() ![]() ![]() How to pack a stereo signal in one record grooveThey sold K-Tel over here in the UK. They were shorter single edits, but still. ![]() Ha, yeah, first album I got as a little kid was a K-Tel album (hits album like "Now That's What I Call Music") that boasted on the cover "22 original hits". ![]() How to pack a stereo signal in one record groove When you put too many songs on a side, the grooves have to be so close together that you can't get as much movement, which means less level/fidelity, and as later grooves are cut they can push the earlier (adjacent) grooves out of shape because there's not enough vinyl between the grooves. Trying to make it too bass-y or too loud can cause the "needle" to move so much it jumps out of the groove. The stylus in a record moves both up & down, and side-to-side. I bought vinyl growing up (and still have shelves of the stuff) and on the early volumes of, for instance "Now That's What I Call Music", which used to cram 8 songs per side on vinyl, there was noticeably inferior sound-quality compared to those same tracks on their original albums, where typically you'd have 5 songs per side.Ha, yeah, first album I got as a little kid was a K-Tel album (hits album like "Now That's What I Call Music") that boasted on the cover "22 original hits". The stuff above groove width is certainly what I've always believed, though I confess that it was all pre-internet, and I haven't googled it since. Later, improvements in cutters made that unnecessary. Notice Motown 45s don't have anything below 70Hz? The lower speed gave the cutter head more time to move but since they handled bass inefficiently, the bass suffered. In the early days at Motown, they cut their 45s at half speed to get hotter masters at the cost of deep bass. A flat transfer on a 12" 45 will sound worse than a well-cut 12" 33 1/3 RPM disk any day. Of course, the end product depends more on the person doing the cutting than the technical specifications of the disk. Now if you could have a 12" 45, that might be something. ![]() 45 RPM is theoretically better than 33 1/3rd but the small disk causes more groove distortion, so the advantage is almost moot. The switch from shellac to vinyl with electronic repro circuits made the 33 1/3rd RPM record superior in every way to 78 RPM. I bought vinyl growing up (and still have shelves of the stuff) and on the early volumes of, for instance "Now That's What I Call Music", which used to cram 8 songs per side on vinyl, there was noticeably inferior sound-quality compared to those same tracks on their original albums, where typically you'd have 5 songs per side.īesides the ability to put more length on a slower spinning record (45, 33-1/3 "Long Playing") is there any advantage or disadvantage to higher or lower rotational speeds?ħ8RPM was necessary before Hi-Fi amps to allow enough movement of the needle to hear the playback. I'll spend a minute or two looking for a quick write up on this to pass along. The stuff above groove width is certainly what I've always believed, though I confess that it was all pre-internet, and I haven't googled it since. Once you understand how it actually works it will be easier to figure out why different formats sound better or worse. Sorry I don't have all the details, but I'd suggest looking up just how a record reproduces sound - 78's are different from 33's & 45's, and stereo/mono makes a difference. OTOH, something like a 12" 45 rpm dance single, the format was chosen because you could get better sound quality (especially bass) that way. Heck, you could possibly cram 10 minutes on one side of a 7" 45 rpm but, again, the sound quality would be worse. You can cram 30 minutes on one side of a 33 rpm record but the sound will suffer. Oh, and the amount of info (length) affects quality, too. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you already have songs that use GA2 you'll need to leave it installed anyway, since you can't load GA2 presets into GA3 (I do wish developers would include such information in their manuals!)Īnother issue with a VST Instrument that pushes the boundaries like GA3 does is compatibility. Installation & CompatibilityĪs with Groove Agent 2, the supplied GA3 activation code requires a Steinberg dongle (not supplied) you can either use an existing one (I already had one for Cubase) or buy one. Despite this, many musicians gave up waiting and investigated other alternatives, such as EZ Drummer and Jamstix, before GA3 was finally released in August 2007. Unfortunately, Steinberg ran into difficulties during GA3 development that prevented it being released for a further year, but they managed to smooth a lot of ruffled feathers by starting a development timeline and associated blog ( to keep everyone informed about progress. Unfortunately, its interface provided few opportunities for yet more growth, and since the original programmer had moved on to pastures new, Steinberg decided to rewrite Groove Agent 3 from the ground up, with an ambitious new list of options. Groove Agent is essentially a virtual drummer VST Instrument that can play drum styles crossing many decades of history, each with a range of complexities, from laid back to busy, but with the flexibility to add accents and fills on demand.īy the time I reviewed Groove Agent 2 in SOS May 2005, it offered many more rhythm style options (81 instead of v1's 54) including grunge, punk and trip-hop, plus nine new kits, as well as up to eight stereo outputs available for more refined mixing options. Since it was first released, back in 2003, Steinberg's Groove Agent has come to the aid of many musicians who either don't want to or can't program drums, yet prefer not to rely on static sample-based loops. The new Dual Mode puts any two of the three agents together in the recording studio for scorching virtual drum and percussion sessions – all within one single VST instrument. It's been a long time coming, but has the latest version of Steinberg's Groove Agent been worth waiting for? While the top-notch Special Agent adds an astoundingly realistic studio drummer complete with new acoustic drum kits to Groove Agent 3’s arsenal, the Percussion Agent is specialized in red-hot percussive grooves and beats. Groove Agent 3 adds two new agents to the Classic Agent seen in previous versions: Special Agent and Percussion Agent. Top-quality drum samples and live recorded drum performances in a massive number of variations cover 123 different styles from over 50 years of music history, automatically synced to the song tempo. ![]() Groove Agent 3 combines a huge library of drum and percussion sounds with a range of player technologies to give you dynamic, ready-to-go drums, beats, rhythms and percussion in only a few mouse clicks.
